Nissan Patrol Build

Episode 1 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

This is the start of a brand new built, this episode features a run through of all the plans for this build and the time frame for it to be completed. I begin the complete tare down of all the body work and interior, also making a start on the engine as well. Beginning with the bulbar, headlights, light bars and front quarter panels I remove what I can to make things easier when it comes to paint time. The 3L motor was never going to stick around, so the new 6L supercharged L98 chevy will be going in its place. That is not all that will be happening, a full suspension swap for the GU patrol will be installed in an upcoming episode to make the thing ride sweet as.

EPISODE 2

Episode 2 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

In this Episode of Built Not Bought we finally get the old 3L diesel Patrol motor out of the coil cab and onto the ground. A few struggles along the way due to the big lift and small shed make it quite the mission this week! This will make way for that huge Supercharged 6L to slot into its place. Gaining access to the engine bay means I can start stripping back all the wiring and cleaning up what was once a massive mess of wires into the new built for purpose system. A brand-new system including dual batteries and solar power will be installed in its place to run all of the accessories to be installed in a future episode. Not only that, we also make a start on the interior by ripping out the old Patrol series 1,2,3 dash to be replaced with the new black, leather series 4 GU dash, giving me that new car feel on the inside 😉

EPISODE 3

Patrol Diff Rebuild

Episode 3 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

In this Episode of Built Not Bought we begin to look at the interior again, but this time it’s the steel frame that gets a makeover. Even though this part isn’t seen once the Patrol is back together, I know it’s there, and there for its getting a fresh coat of paint! Now that the engine is finally out I begin to look at tidying up the body wiring harness in the area to make way for modifications to suit the new LS 6L engine. We finish this episode off with a bit of preventative maintenance, by taking this opportunity to open up the front diff and replace all of the swivel hub assembly, king pin bearings and also wheel bearings. This will ensure that once she is back on the road, there will be no premature failure of the wheel bearings from water ingress or heat from not enough lubrication!! 😉

EPISODE 4

Episode 4 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

In this episode of Built Not Bought we start talking paint. Starting with the chassis and then working our way to the rest of the cab and body work. To be able to do this, the tray needs to come off that back but my little muscles aren’t up to the task leaving me at a loose end for a couple of days so I begin work on a couple of the fenders. Once the tray comes off, I prep the chassis by removing the fuel tank, stripping off all the red dust with a wire brush and then a good scrub with hot soapy water and a scourer from the kitchen sink haha An all in one satin finish chassis paint is then sprayed on with a couple of coats and left to cure in the sunshine 😊 The last challenge was taking the gearbox out, I don’t have the luxury of a hoist this time so had to get a bit creative with the jack! But got it done in the end 👍 Enjoy the episode. Next release will be the first of the shiny parts – suspension! So stay tuned 😊

EPISODE 5

4x4 Suspension

Episode 5 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

In this episode of Built Not Bought we finally, finally get start on the suspension! The first of the new shiny bits goes on the Patrol. This is where the episodes start to get real good and the built comes together. We install a full 4 inch lift with uperior Engineering arms (https://www.superiorengineering.com.au/) , Dobinson coils from Malaga Suspension (http://www.malagasuspensions.com.au/) and King Shocks from Mike’s Shock Shop (https://www.facebook.com/mikesshockshop/) . The back end is completed from start to finish in this episode including a repainted diff and all. Sit back and enjoy! 😊

EPISODE 6

Episode 6 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

In this episode of Built Not Bought we continue installing the new shiny bits of the patrol with doing the front end. I lift the whole chassis and roll out the front diff for a respray and the install back underneath with all new fresh components. Superior Engineering arms (https://www.superiorengineering.com.au/) , Dobinson coils from Malaga Suspension (http://www.malagasuspensions.com.au/) and King Shocks from Mike’s Shock Shop (https://www.facebook.com/mikesshockshop/). A little more work is required at this end with the raised shock towers needing a bit of cutting out of the wheel arches and some custom brackets to hold the remote reservoir canisters. Next week is Paint~!

EPISODE 7

DIY Paint Job

Episode 7 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

In this episode of Built Not Bought we finally get started on the paint job! I will be doing this myself with guidance from a family member who’s had experience in the paint industry. It will be a closed-door spray and done without the use of a paint booth. Many hours of sanding is what it takes for a good paint job and the quality is all on the prep work. I keep the colour white to avoid repainting the engine bay, interior and door jams but add a little something special to make it flicker in the sun 😉 Enjoy…

EPISODE 8

Episode 8 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

In this episode of Built Not Bought I make a real start on the 12V electrics side of things. I start by fabricating a back board for the interior to house the fuse blocks for main and auxiliary batteries. This is the ultimate setup for a 4wd and will make expansion and fault finding easier in the future!

EPISODE 9

Welding

Episode 9 of BUILT NOT BOUGHT

In this episode of Built Not Bought I build a battery box out of scrap metal to put under the bonnet of the patrol. After that I start looking at upgrading the interior with a new dash install. To do this I have to change a lot of the plugs and brackets behind the dash, but I run into a problem… This plastic inserts I was going to source from over east were no longer an option. I have to think of a new plan to finish off the interior, so stay tuned for the next Episode…
